Life without music-sunil shrestha

Life without music

Friedrich Nietzsche said ‘without music, life would be mistake’.

It is unknown to human kind when the single light of music was discovered but it is always know when it was heard  the moment would have been great. It will always remain an invalid and hypothetical statement -life without music.
no music, no life

Music gives the brain opportunities to explore, exercise, play with and train those mental, physical, and social muscles necessary for the maintenance and formation of society as we know it.  It offers a safe forum in which we can practice and hone skills that are vital through the life span.”

Not every person is a singer. Not every person plays a musical instrument. Not everyone is creates/composes music. Yet, we are all music consumers. Can you imagine a day without music? No music on the TV, on the radio, in a movie, in the car, at a sporting event, at a religious service…NO MUSIC! This is unimaginable to me.

                                                     MUSIC IS LIFE

house music - nick

House music is a genre of electronic dance music; it began in Chicago in the early 1980s. It was initially popularized circa 1984 in Chicago, but beginning in 1985, it fanned out to other major cities such as Detroit, Toronto, New York City, San Francisco, Boston, Montreal, Manchester, Miami, London, and Paris. It then began to influence popular music in Europe. Since the early to mid-1990s, house music has been infused in mainstream pop and dance music worldwide.
House music has many sub genres within it that many music producers branch out to create songs of a verity of genres. Some of these sub genres include:
Progressive house songs are usually much longer than your standard house music song this is because they usually start off with a slow beat that builds up slowly until it peaks.
Dubstep is often comprised of heavy bass that is manipulated to make a wobble pattern which is often referred to as the ‘wub’. Allot of people miss understand dubstep and say it is just random noise, because they don’t understand the genre. It is usually consisted of a slow beat which is then ‘dropped’ into deep bass and fast beats.
Hardstyle is a fast paced beat with a heavy bass and this is often known as the ‘duff duff’ music because the bass is so consistent and heavy it can be heard from a long way away. There are often lyrics involved but most listeners are interested in the extremely fast beat which encourages insane dancing.
Trance music is exactly what it sounds like, the music is usually very simple and repetitive and songs can go for 30 minutes at a time. It usually sends listeners into a trance like state where they dance around with no cares, usually because they are on some kind of drug, drugs are closely associated with this style of music.

deadmau5 - nick

Joel Thomas Zimmerman is known as deadmau5 (pronounced "dead mouse"), he is a Canadian progressive-house music producer and performer. Deadmau5  is a producer of many styles within the house  genre and sometimes other forms of electronic dance music. The origin of the deadmau5 name comes from when he was 14 years old and he started smelling a strange odour coming from his computer, eventually the computer shut off completely and he was forced to pull the computer apart in which he found a dead mouse. The story spread around the block and the kids in the neighbourhood referred to him as ‘that dead mouse guy’. Joel was a member of a chat room, and since he become known as dead mouse guy among his friends he decided to change his chat room name to ‘deadmouse’ but it was too many characters so he shortened it to deadmau5, which is a form of language known as ‘leet’. Joel created the original deadmau5 logo using some 3D modelling software. The ‘mau5head’ is the symbol of deadmau5 and everyone who knows him knows this, it is his icon.

Deadmau5 has long been one of my favourite and most respected music producers of all time, I’ve been listening to his music from the beginning i can still remember when i first heard strobe and it blew my mind, because I had never heard anything like it before and that was when i started listening to the progressive music genre.  Deadmau5 will long be remembered as one of the greats of music.

How music works?- Sunil Shrestha

How music works?

After my last blog on how music notes are constructed  we may be subsequently regarding how music works. Music has different fundamentals. These are pitch, beat(pulse), rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, allocation of voices, forms. These are the basic elements included in how music works but are not limited to this.

Pitch in music is a position of a single sound in the complete range of sound. Sounds are higher or lower in pitch according to the frequency of vibration of the sound waves producing them. A high frequency (e.g., 880 hertz[cycles per second]) is perceived as a high pitch; a low frequency (e.g., 55 Hz) as a low pitch.

Middle C (261.626 Hz)

Beat A musical beat is an individual stroke of measured time, the steady pulse of a songs. beats are rhythmically organised by the time signature, and given speed by the tempo. Whereas off beat is off tempo.

RHYTHM, in music, the placement of sounds in time. In its most general sense rhythm (Greek rhythmos, derived from rhein, “to flow”) is an ordered alternation of contrasting elements. The notion of rhythm also occurs in other arts (e.g., poetry, painting, sculpture, and architecture) as well as in nature (e.g.,biological rhythms.)

MELODY Melody is the main tune of a song; the outcome of a series of notes. Melody is regarded as “horizontal” because its notes are read from left-to-right; while harmony is “vertical” because the notes are played simultaneously, and therefore must be written vertically in notation.

Harmony Harmony is produced when two complementary notes sound simultaneously. Harmony is found in chords, or can be played along a main melody.Harmony is described as being “vertical,” since harmony is only achieved when notes  are played at the same time. Melody, on the other hand, is “horizontal,” since its notes are played in succession and read horizontally (for the most part) from left-to-right.

Harmony maintained

Texture musical texture is the overall sound of a piece of music commonly described according to the number of and relationship between parts or lines of music: monophony, heterophony, polyphony, homophony, or monody. The perceived texture of a piece may also be affected by the timbre of the instruments, the number of instruments used, and the distance between each musical line, among other things.

Australian Hip Hop: Horrorshow ~ Anthony Ryburn

Horrorshow is an Australian Hip Hop duo originating from the inner west of Sydney with band members Solo (Vocal) and Adit (Producer).
They first gained some popularity with the release of their début album the 'Grey Space' in 2008 which earned them an aria nomination while still in their high school years, and led to future tours with other Australian Hip Hop artists such as 'Hermitude' and 'The Herd'.
Following this a release of the album inside story gained widespread recognition and praise for its soul and lyricism (much of what Australian hip hop is focused on today).
At every show they have played within Sydney, they have been sold out. They toured with the Hilltop Hoods travelling to Europe, London and all across Australia supporting them.
Despite their own albums, they have also collaborated with many other Australian hip hop artists to try and spread the music genre and its favourable culture.

If you would like to listen to some easy soul music backed with some impressive lyrics which paint images in your head, Horrorshow are definitely the band to be thinking about. Although they are not as mainstream as many others out there, they are still heavily praised in the underground world and have a distinct fan base.

Note To Self - Horrorshow

Construction of musical notes- sunil shrestha

Construction of musical notes

You couldn't read or write music without notes. If you think of music as a language, the notes are like letters of the alphabet. If you know how to recognize the notes, you can learn the language.
Notes are made up of up to three specific components: note head, stem, and flag. Every note has a head — it’s the round part of a note.
A note stem is the vertical line attached to the note head. A note flag is the little line that comes off the top or bottom of the note stem.
Every note has a head. An eighth note (the third one shown here) has all three possible components of a note: the head, the stem, and the flag

each note getting a flag, though, notes with flags can also be connected to each other with a beam, which is really just another, more organized-looking incarnation of the flag. For example, two eighth notes can be written as each having a flag, or as connected by a beam.
Eighth notes can be connected together with beams instead of having individual flags.

Four  sixteenth notes can have flags, can be grouped into two pairs connected by a double beam, or can all be connected by one double beam. It doesn’t matter which way they are written, they would sound the same when played.

These three groups of sixteenth notes, written in three different ways, would all sound alike when played.

Likewise, eight thirty-second notes could be written in a number of ways. Note that thirty-second notes get three flags (or three beams).

Like eighth notes and sixteenth notes, thirty-second notes can be written separately or “beamed” together.

70's Rock - Pink Floyd ~ Robert Farrugia

Introducing Pink Floyd to 70's Rock! Pink Floyd is a rock band formed in 1965 in London active through 1965 to 1987.Pink Floyd consists of four members Syd Barrett on vocals and guitar, Roger Waters on vocals and bass guitar, Nick Mason on drums and Rick Wright key board and vocals.

In 1973 Pink Floyd released the album Dark Side of The Moon. This album was one of the most commercial rock album in the world. It stayed number one on US charts where it remained on the chart for more than 14 years! Selling more than 40 million copies world wide.

"Comfortably Numb" by Pink Floyd is my favorite song, the great vocals and thrilling guitar solos. Below is a video clip from the movie "The wall" where Comfortably Numb is being played. This movie is such an incredible peice depicting the life of Walters and what he went through this film really is a master piece of rock!

What is music theory?- Sunil Shrestha

What is music theory?

The global passport for communication today is music. It is often told that music is land without borders. But what determines that music is good or bad. The reasonable arguments to support good quality of music could be:-
  • What kind of music we would like to hear preferably our taste and preferences
  • what we perceive what music we like
  • what is the language of music

Music theory

Music theory is the understanding the language of music. The main thing to know about music theory is that it is simply a way to explain the music we hear. It is not necessary that a good musician cant be born without the knowledge of music. In fact, if you are a good musician, you already know a lot of theory.

The concepts and rules that make up music theory are very much like the grammatical rules that govern written language.Being able to transcribe music makes it possible for other musicians to read and play compositions exactly as the composer intended. Learning to read music is almost exactly like learning a new language, to the point where a fluent person can “hear” a musical “conversation” when reading a piece of sheet music. Broadly, music theory may include any statement, belief, or conception of or about music.

There are plenty of intuitive, self-taught musicians out there who have never learned to read or write music and find the whole idea of learning music theory tedious and unnecessary. However, just like the educational leaps that can come with learning to read and write, music theory can help musicians learn new techniques, perform unfamiliar styles of music, and develop the confidence to try new things.
Thus,  learning to play and understand music takes a lot of personal discipline, but in the end, it's worth all the hard work.

70's Rock - Queen ~ Robert Farrugia

Introducing Queen to 70's Rock! Queen are a Rock band originated in London in 1970. Queen consists of 4 band member Freddie Mercury lead on vocals and piano (far left) , Brian May on guitar and vocals (middle right). John Deacon on bass guitar (middle left) and Roger Taylor on drums and vocal (far right).

Queen is famously known for the single Bohemian Phapsody in 1975 during their album release "A Night At The Opera" This song never had a vision to be so successful. This was because the song had a length of 5 minutes and 55 seconds which was seen to be too long for radio. Despite the length of the song it became one of the greatest singles they produced hitting radios becoming number 1 in the UK for a consecutive 9 weeks!

on the 23rd of November 1991 Freddy Mercury died. As a tribute Queen released a double sided single to raise money for charity. It became number one on UK charts and stayed up their for 5 weeks, raising over one million pounds. Queen then became the first band to have the same single become number one on UK charts twice. Freddie Mercury was awarded posthumously the BRIT’s “Outstanding Contribution to British Music”. Making Queen true legends of ROCK!

70's Rock - Led Zeppelin ~ Robert Farrugia

Introducing Led Zeppelin to 70s Rock! Led Zeppelin  is an rock band formed in London in 1968. The band consisted of guitarist Jimmy Page, singer Robert Plant, bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham. The group's heavy, guitar-driven sound, rooted in blues rock on their early albums, has drawn them recognition as one of the progenitors of  rock

As seen in the picture above are the members of Led Zeppelin Consisting of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham

Led Zeppelin is widely considered to be one of the most successful, innovative and influential rock groups in history. They are one of the best-selling music artists in the history of audio recording; various sources estimate the group's sales at more than 200 or even 300 million albums worldwide. With 111.5 million RIAA-certified units, they are the second-best-selling band in the United States. Each of their nine studio albums placed on the Billboard Top 10, and six reached the number-one spot. Rolling Stone magazine described them as "the heaviest band of all time", "the biggest band of the '70s" and "unquestionably one of the most enduring bands in rock history". They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.

Led Zeppelin have produced many great songs, personal what like about led Zeppelin is that none of their music is electronic it is all hand played instruments, which you rarely see this century. Personally my favourite song is “In my time of dying” because of the strong focus of electric guitars. Also for more of a vocal favorite I prefer “Immigrant Song”. I am pretty sure everyone knows Led Zeppelin for one of their most influential songs of time “Stairway to Heaven”. Take a look at the videos below to see some real ROCK!
